Program Description:

Overseas Study Grants* (Study Abroad Scholarships) are available for overseas study recognised by UWA.

*This includes New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants

UWA recognised overseas study that is credit bearing or a compulsory course requirement will receive priority.

If you have been allocated to a university as part of the Student Exchange Program, please submit this Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship) application to be considered for a overseas study grant.

A student can only be offered one Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship) or BPhil Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship) from UWA during their time at UWA. For more information see the financial assistance website.

Please note:
  • Grants are often paid during or after an overseas program and should not be relied upon to pay program costs.
  • Grants are awarded by the relevant board and are primarily based on academic merit (weighted average mark), points awarded to a student's degree, university internationalisation priorities and available fundingStudents undertaking a mandatory course component overseas or receiving academic credit will prioritised.
  • Students will not be awarded a Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship) if they have a travel related scholarship awarded for the same overseas experience
  • Students with a WAM under 65% are eligible to apply for the Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship), however, grants (scholarships) are awarded based on academic merit.
IMPORTANT: As per UWA's Policy on International Student Mobility (Outbound) all university recognised overseas activities must be booked through a UWA preferred travel supplier - either Campus Travel (Murray Street) or STA Travel (UWA Branch) and upload the travel itinerary to Concur (UWA's risk management system). Failure to do so will render any grant (scholarship) awarded null and void. Instructions for uploading travel details to Concur will be provided after results of the grant (scholarship) application have been released.

PLEASE NOTE: The Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship) Policy is under review for overseas programs commencing from December 2018 onward. We will update this brochure once the revised policy is established.

For students participating in overseas programs commencing between the dates of June 2018 to January 2020, please refer to the following guidelines:

Grants will be awarded on priority (in no particular order) to students going on exchange to:
Exchange partners in Asia
Queen's University - Canada
University of Alberta - Canada
University of Bristol - United Kingdom
University of Leeds - United Kingdom
University of Southampton - United Kingdom
Durham University - United Kingdom
Uppsala University - Sweden
University of Tuebingen* - Germany
University of Otago – New Zealand

For the above destinations, the Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship) will be $2000.

*Students attending University of Tuebingen may be eligible for the Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship) and the Baden-Wuerttemberg Stipendium. If you are a student who receives a Baden-Wuerttemberg Stipendium, the Overseas Study Grant (Study Abroad Scholarship) must be used on flights. Please note the Baden Wuerttemberg Stipendium is not guaranteed.

Students enrolled in a language major (French, German, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Japanese, Indonesian, or Mandarin) who wish to undertake overseas study at exchange partner universities in-country (including French-Canada and Switzerland) and will be credited at least 6 points towards their major, will be eligible for $2000. Students will have to be enrolled in the language major and have completed at least 12 points towards it.

Please note that eligible Bachelor of Philosophy students will still be guaranteed at least $1500; if a Bachelor of Philosophy student wishes to attend one of the above universities, they will receive $2000 instead.
